چکیده

droxide surface sites, characteristics of water a t the interface, and chemical structures of specifically adsorbed molecules. Also, ATR-CIR spectroscopy can qualitatively describe the influence of pH and “inert” electrolyte ions on reactions that occur a t lor near the solid-solution interface. Finally, since signal intensity is not necessarily proportional to the concentration of goethite (unless two systems have the same degree of dispersivity), this technique can be regarded as semiquantitative if and only if IR absorption bands coming from chemical bulk groups of the solid are used as internal standards. Consequently, ATR-CIR spectroscopy offers an in situ means of studying some very important reactions which occur at the solid-water interface such as photocatalysis, surface redox reactions, interfacial complexation, and ion-exchange reactions. By using such an analytical tool as ATR-CIR we should eventually be able to understand the complex nature of surface reaction stoichiometries which will in turn lead to better predictive models. Since aqueous interfacial reaction chemistry is important to a broad array of processes including mineral dissolution and flotation, corrosion, heterogeneous catalysis, and microcontaminant transport, this technique promises to be used a great deal more in the future.

Solubilization and Encapsulation of Fullerenes by Amphiphilic Block Copolymers

Solubilization and encapsulation of fullerenes C60 and C70 by ultralarge hollow micelles formed by rod-coil diblock copolymers and characterization of the resulting self-organized fullerene-block copolymer assemblies are reported. The solubilization capacity of each fullerene in poly(phenylquinoline)-blockpolystyrene (PPQ-PS) micelles in binary solvents, trifluoroacetic acid/dichloromethane, an...

Comparison of Solubilization of Hydrocarbons in (PEO-PPO) Diblock versus (PEO-PPO-PEO) Triblock Copolymer Micelles

The solubilization of hydrocarbons by micelles formed of diblock and symmetric triblock copolymers in water are compared in the framework of a mean-field theory of solubilization. The block copolymers contain poly(ethylene oxide) as the hydrophilic block and poly(propylene oxide) as the hydrophobic block and are designated as EXPYEX or EWPZ (where E and P denote ethylene and propylene oxides an...

Solubilization of a Poorly Soluble Aromatic Drug by Micellar Solutions of Amphiphilic Block Copoly(oxyalkylene)s*

This chapter is a summary of our work on the design of block copolymer micellar systems with improved solubilization capacity for poorly soluble aromatic drugs. The copolymers of interest are block copoly(oxyalkylene)s with linear dior triblock architecture which combine hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) with hydrophobic blocks formed from poly(propylene oxide), poly(1,2-butylene oxide), poly(st...

Amphiphilic Block Copolymer Nano-micelles: Effect of Length Ratio of the Hydrophilic Block

Block copolymer nano-micelles are especially important in cancer treatment because of their fine dimensions. In this article, three systems of amphiphilic copolymers with similar lengths and different ratios of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic chains are studied using implicit-solvent coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. The factor fphil is defined as the ratio of the number...

A new hydrotropic block copolymer micelle system for aqueous solubilization of paclitaxel.

Paclitaxel (PTX), a potent anti-cancer drug, is poorly soluble in water, and this has been a major limitation in developing patient friendly formulations for clinical applications. Recent studies on polymeric micelles, especially hydrotropic polymer micelles, have suggested an alternative formulation of PTX based on their high loading capacity and physical stability in aqueous media. The presen...
